Boxing gloves are an essential piece of gear for any boxer, whether training for fitness, sparring, or competing. Like any piece of equipment, boxing gloves need the correct care to maintain their lifespan. If looked after well, they will continue to provide the required protection and longevity that is needed. Below are a few tips and trick on how to look after your boxing gloves.
- Clean after every use. This sounds easy, however after a long session, the last thing on your mind is generally doing the washing however this is one of the more important things to do. When in use, you sweat more than normal which causes dirt and bacterial to build up, causing an unpleasant smell. If the bacteria is not wiped away, it will cause long term deterioration. The best way to do this is to wipe then out with a clean cloth and leave them out to air out and dry. Do not use any chemicals.
- Dry out your boxing gloves properly before putting them away. Putting your gloves away whilst wet or damp can cause humidity and the potential growth of mold. Make sure to keep the glove in an open area, out of direct sunlight until they are completely dry, then store away.
- Storing your gloves away in a bag will prevent them from being open to elements, insects or getting squashed and de-formed. You want to make sure that the glove is in its best possible shape as this will ultimately help keep your hands protected.
- If you have access to another pair, its a great idea to rotate your boxing gloves as this will allow them to dry completely and prevent excessive damage, especially if you are using them regularly.
Following the steps above and taking care of your boxing gloves is a simple yet effective way to prolong their lifespan and ensure that they continue to provide maximum protection. If you treat your gloves well outside of the ring, they’ll treat you well in the ring!
